ESPN MLB Free Pick: Giants vs Phillies

If there is any contending team in the major leagues that has truly experienced the severe ups and downs of the pennant race this season, it is the San Francisco Giants, who are no strangers to the heights, having won two of the last four World Series titles. On Wednesday night they will look to bolster their case in the National League West as they tackle the Philadelphia Phillies in baseball betting action that is set to get underway at 7:05 PM ET at Citizens Bank Park in the City of Brotherly Love.

For the Giants, it will be southpaw Madison Bumgarner (11-7, 3.38 ERA) getting the start and looking to stay in a groove, while the Phillies go with AJ Burnett (6-9, 4.08 ERA), who was banged around pretty good in his last outing.

These teams are looking at the playoff race a little differently. The Giants are the first-place squad in the NL West, while the Phils are occupying last place in the NL East, thirteen games behind the lead. Both teams would like to be active before the trade deadline.

VietBet.comIn the baseball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at VietBet, the Giants are the favorites on the road:

San Francisco Giants (Bumgarner – L) -141
Philadelphia Phillies (Burnett – R) +131

Under 7.5 Runs -120
Over 7.5 Runs +100

Anyone who has followed the Giants this season knows that this club had every reason to push the panic button. They were sailing along with the best record in the majors, as well as a 9.5-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers, until June 9, when they began to move backward. They lost 18 of their next 23 games, as the Dodgers caught up. It’s only been after Independence Day that this team has started to recover, and if they have indeed weathered the storm, they may be very difficult to deal with the rest of the way.

Bruce Bochy’s club has now won five of its last six games, although VietBet patrons realize that it has been against lower-rung teams like Arizona, Miami and now Philadelphia, but any wins will do right now. The Giants lead the Dodgers by a game in the NL West, and believe it or not, if they win on Wednesday night, they could conceivably overtake the Washington Nationals for the best record in the senior circuit. They already have the league’s top road mark (28-19).

Bumgarner has a sizzling 1.94 ERA on the road this season, and has been essentially on a pace of one strikeout per inning. A member of the National League All-Star team, he was hit relatively hard in a couple of starts before the break, allowing 20 hits and ten earned runs in 13-1/3 innings, but baseball bettors saw that he pitched very nicely five days ago in Marlins Park, going six innings with a single run allowed in a 9-1 victory over Miami.

The peripatetic Burnett has had the opposite experience in and out of the break. He looked pretty good against Pittsburgh and Washington leading into it, but lasted just five innings against the Atlanta Braves on July 18, surrendering six runs in five innings. On Monday night the Phillies were very disappointed in the effort from southpaw Cliff Lee, who they are hoping to hang out there as trade bait (in pursuit of dumping salary) but didn’t get what they wanted out of that showcase, as the former Cy Young Award winner allowed six runs.

VietBet customers should note that both of these teams have been trending toward the “over.” San Francisco has exceeded the total in five of its last six games, while Philadelphia has done so in eight of its last nine. At even money in the baseball betting odds, that may be a direction to go in.
