One of baseball’s oldest rivalries will be renewed in Major League Baseball betting action when the Cincinnati Reds travel to face the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night at 8:15 ET on MLB Network at Busch Stadium. This will be the second of a three game series with the home team listed as big ‘favorites’ on the board.

The Reds fought valiantly before falling 6-5 to the Cardinals in 10 innings on Monday night. Right fielder Jay Bruce led the way with four RBI’s and a run scored as he went 2-for-5 at the plate including his 14th homerun of the season. Bruce’s double in the top of the ninth sent the game into extras as Trevor Rosenthal blew the save opportunity for St. Louis. Second baseman Brandon Phillips returned from a thumb injury and went 0-for-4 in the game, but is still a big part of this offense as he has hit .269 this year. Right hander Alfredo Simon will get the start for Cincy on Tuesday as he tries to continue a solid season on the hill. He comes in with a record of 12-8, but has not won in six starts since his last win back on July 9th over the Chicago Cubs. Simon went 5.0 innings in his last outing as he gave up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits in a 7-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on the road. The Reds are a feeble 5-14 in their L/19 road games including the loss on Monday night.

The Cardinals got a walk-off single from shortstop Jhonny Peralta as he knocked in left fielder Matt Holiday to win the game in extras. Peralta had a solid night at the dish going 3-for-5 scoring once and adding the aforementioned game-winning RBI. Newly acquired pitcher Justin Masterson went 5.0 innings allowing four runs on five hits as he earned a no decision for his efforts. Another new acquisition will get the nod on Tuesday as John Lackey makes his fourth start since joining the team from the Boston Red Sox. He went 7.0 innings in his last start giving up two runs on five hits as he took the no decision in a 4-3 win against the San Diego Padres. The ‘under’ has been on fire with the Cards as a home ‘favorite’ going 6-2 in the L/8 such contests. St. Louis has struggled to score runs this season with the league’s 28th ranked offense scoring just 3.77 runs per game. As the second place team in the NL Central every game will be important down the stretch for the Cards as they trail the Milwaukee Brewers by two games in the loss column coming into Tuesday’s action.

This will be a low scoring game where runs will be tough to come by as neither of these lineups is familiar with the opposing pitchers. We smell a rat as the Cards are overwhelming ‘favorites’ in a game that will be very tight. The Reds bullpen has been a strong point all season long and that is why we give them the slight edge to get the job done in this match-up.
