The race for the playoffs continues in the American League in Major League Baseball betting action when the Detroit Tigers face the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday afternoon at 1:05 ET at Tropicana Field on Sun Sports. This will be the rubber match of a three game series with the Tigers coming in as ‘favorites’ on the board.

The Tigers won their second straight over the Rays on Wednesday 6-0 behind great pitching and an explosive offensive effort. A grand slam from Victor Martinez in the seventh inning provided all of the insurance needed to get pitcher Rick Porcello his 14th win of the season as he threw a complete game shutout. Martinez drove in five runs including his 24th homerun of the year. The story of this game will be left handed ace David Price returning to his old home for the first time since joining Detroit at the trade deadline. In his three starts with the Tigers, Price is 2-1 as he went 8.0 innings in his last start allowing two runs on three hits in a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. The addition of Price gives Detroit the last three Cy Young winning pitchers on its roster as Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander bookend the lefty. The Tigers are 35-27 away from Comerica Park and come in as a ‘favorite’ in this contest that is expected to be a pitcher’s duel with Price facing off against many of his friends on his former team.

The Rays are quickly falling out of contention for the second wild card spot as their offense continues to struggle when games are hanging in the balance. Second baseman Ben Zobrist doubled in the first inning off Porcello, but the next 20 Tampa Bay hitters were retired in order. Pitcher Jake Odorizzi lost his first start in his L/6 as he gave up three runs while striking out seven in 6.2 innings of work. The Rays did get some good news with the return of Wil Myers who went 0-for-3 in his first game back from the DL. Right hander Alex Cobb will have the duty of facing a very hot Tigers lineup that is primed for a sweep by the bay. Cobb shutout the New York Yankees in his last start allowing six hits and one walk as he struck out eight in a 5-0 victory. Tampa Bay’s lineup will have to wake up and get something going against its old buddy if it wants to have any chance in this game. Most of these hitters will be seeing Price for the very first time and that has to be an uneasy feeling for manager Joe Maddon’s squad.

The Tigers are an outstanding road team and that has already shown to be true in this series. We expect to see Detroit get enough run support for Price to get a victory over his old mates. Even without much contribution from All-Star Miguel Cabrera in this series the Tigers have scored 14 runs through the first two games. Don’t expect to see Detroit let up any as Price will be hungry to get this win and help his team further its playoff chances.
